Everything ends up in one pipe
Every fixture in the house feeds a branch line, and every branch line feeds one main out to the street. Clear a branch and you have fixed one room. Clear the main and you have fixed the house.
Knowing which one you are dealing with before anyone drives out is most of the job, and it is the difference between the small machine and the big one. That is why the questions on the phone matter.
Whose line is it?
On a sewer backup the first real question is who owns the broken part, because it decides who pays. Work through these three before you call anybody, us included.
Is it only your house, or the neighbours too?
If the houses either side are backing up at the same time, the problem is very unlikely to be inside your property line. If it is only you, it is almost certainly your lateral, the private pipe running from the house out to the city main.
Where does the water come up first?
Water finds the lowest opening it can. A basement floor drain or the ground floor shower coming up first points at the main line. An upstairs fixture backing up on its own almost never does.
Has it happened before in the same spot?
A blockage that keeps returning to the same fixture is a symptom, not the problem. On an older SE Portland line that usually means roots have found a joint, or a section has settled into a belly that holds water and catches everything passing through.

Yard drains and downspout lines
Area drains, driveway drains and the buried lines carrying your downspouts away from the foundation. They pack with silt and leaf over years and nobody thinks about them until the first proper Portland rain puts water where it should not be.
They are worth clearing before the weather turns rather than during it, and they are usually a smaller job than people expect.
